How to Calculate Steel Floor Structure

Structural Steel - 04/01/2024

Calculating the steel quantity for a project needs to meet several important standards, such as ensuring the steel quantity is appropriate to avoid shortages that may compromise the project’s standards, while also preventing excess to avoid resource wastage and increased construction costs. Let’s explore how to calculate steel floor structure with Pebsteel in the following article.

1. Why is it necessary to calculate the steel floor structure?

Investors always aim to optimize construction costs while ensuring the quality of the project. To balance costs reasonably, there is no other way but to conduct careful calculations to determine the appropriate figures. This calculation process will help investors accurately estimate the necessary amount of materials, avoiding shortages or excesses within the scope of the project. This calculation step applies to large projects and is crucial for smaller-scale constructions.

Suppose contractors and construction workers decide on the quantity of steel based on personal experience. In that case, it can lead to various serious risks, such as insufficient load-bearing capacity of the floor. In reality, numerous constructions have collapsed immediately after construction, even before completing the pouring of the mixed concrete foundation, due to the absence of reinforcing steel on the floor. Conversely, using an excessive quantity of steel compared to structural requirements can enhance the building’s robustness but unnecessarily escalate costs.

Therefore, understanding how to calculate the quantity of steel floor is extremely crucial, aiding in controlling the structure’s quality, ensuring its ability to resist compression forces, and preventing material wastage. By accurately calculating the required amount of steel, investors can predict the total steel quantity needed for the project, facilitating more reasonable cost management and avoiding unnecessary losses while optimizing the construction process.

2. Guide on a detailed calculation of steel floor structure

Nowadays, contractors commonly use the following formula to calculate the quantity of steel needed per square meter of the floor. This is a common formula widely applied in the field of steel structure construction

V = mD

Where:

V is volume (m3)

M is mass (kg)

D is density (kg/m3)

With a minimum steel ratio of 0.7%, the calculation is as follows:

  • Quantity of steel in 1 m3 of steel = 0.7% x 1 = 0.007 m3
  • Steel mass = m = D x V = 0.007 x 7850 = 54.95kg

With a maximum steel ratio of 1.0%, the calculation is as follows:

  • Quantity of steel in 1 m3 of steel = 1.0% x 1 = 0.01 m3
  • Steel mass = m = D x V = 0.01 x 7850 = 78.5kg

For each type and size of steel, the quantity required will differ. Below is a calculation table for the construction material quantities that customers can utilize for reference:
